HAZLET -- Ocean clinched a tie for the Shore Conference Federal
Division title last night, using an opportunistic defense and dominant
ground game to post a 33-0 win over Raritan.
Ocean (6-1, 6-1) is now tied for first in the division with idle
Middletown South.
Quarterback Charles Timbers led the way, rushing for a 38-yard
touchdown and throwing a 36-yard touchdown pass to Steve Vogt that
helped give the Spartans a 21-0 halftime lead.
"We're a team with a lot of heart and we're upset that teams
have doubted us," said Timbers, a sophomore. "We think we're
better than Middletown South and, hopefully, we'll have a chance to
prove it."
The Spartans also made big plays on defense, intercepting quarterback
Dave Petruzzi three times and recovering three fumbles. Timbers had two
of the interceptions and senior Sean Roenbeck returned another one 40
yards on the first play of the third quarter for a touchdown to make it
27-0. Perhaps the biggest play was a fumble recovery by Bobby McManigal at
the Ocean 9, following a jarring hit by defensive lineman Alex Villani
on Petruzzi with 1:32 left in the first half that killed the Rockets'
momentum.
Also starring for Ocean was senior Greg
Sariotis, who scored two
touchdowns and ran for 91 yards on 14 carries.
