TOMS RIVER -- Sean Nassoiy was Mr. Unstoppable and Mr. Versatile last night.

The Monsignor Donovan defense was unbreakable.

And the Griffins are on the brink of their second straight trip to the state playoffs.

Nassoiy rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another and the Griffins posted their first shutout as they whipped Mater Dei 38-0 in a nondivisional game.

"Nothing beats a game like this," said Nassoiy, a senior who shredded the Seraphs for 155 yards on 10 carries. "This was the final home game for the seniors. I'm happy for the seniors. It's a good way to go out."

Nassoiy, a left-handed quarterback, also punted, returned punts and saw action at safety. He's popular on campus, too, as he was nominated Homecoming King.

His brother, Colin, 8, a member of the Jackson Mitey Mites at the Pop Warner level and the Griffins' ball boy, stood in for him during halftime Homecoming ceremonies.

"I like playing quarterback the most because I am in control," Nassoiy said after scoring on runs of 23, 45 and 21 yards. "I like to be in control."

Nassoiy, whose team took a 17-0 halftime lead, floated a 37-yard touchdown pass to Dennis Kenny.

Ranked 30th in a class of 220 students, Nassoiy finds his name on the lips of recruiters from the Ivy and Patriot leagues.

"Sean does everything but drive the team bus," Donovan coach Tom Farrell said. "He is our athletic, emotional and spiritual leader."

Farrell presented a game ball to John Mendes, Donovan's defensive coordinator. The Seraphs managed 53 yards on the ground and 50 through the air against the unit dubbed the Blue Wall.

"It's the first time we played like a Blue Wall," Farrell said. "We kept our strategy simple. We made the reads. It's a matter of playing hard and executing your job."
