LAKEWOOD -- Lakewood senior running back Rashawn Haynes peeled off his jersey.

His coach, Nick Eremita, peeled off the superlatives.

After blazing for 120 yards and three touchdowns in yesterday's 31-7 victory over Brick Memorial in a Shore Conference Constitution Division game, Haynes unveiled a T-shirt that said "300 yards."

"It pumps me up," he said. ""It gives me a goal. I think about it on every play ... I've gotta get this three ... I've gotta get this three."

Haynes received the shirt from Mike Bonventre, a former Brick Memorial head coach who works with the Piners' running backs. Bonventre, hosting a gathering, gave the shirt to the 5-foot-7, 160-pounder the Thursday night prior to the Piners' win over Neptune last week.

"He wants me to have a breakout game," Haynes said. "He feels I am one of the best backs in the Shore Conference. He wants me to prove it."

"If he is not the most dynamic back in the Shore Conference, I don't know who is," Eremita said. "He has a burst like no other back I have ever seen. We are not a solid I-formation team, so he doesn't get many touches (Haynes did his damage on 12 carries yesterday). When he gets the ball, he can go the distance at any time. He is a tireless worker. During the summer, he has been in our weight room at 6 a.m."

Haynes, whose team raced to a 25-0 halftime lead, scored on runs of 51, 42 and 3 yards.

J.R. Smith, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, also came up big for the Piners. His leaping interception in the end zone on Brick Memorial's first series set up Lakewood's initial touchdown, which came on a 20-yard pass from Andrew Nelson to Carlton Henderson with 5:48 left in the opening quarter.

"It sparked us up," said Smith, whose team scored 13 first-quarter points. "It got us real hungry. We could have either lost or won. We had to step it up and show what we are made of."

"They were taking it to us," Eremita said. ""The interception turned the tide. We needed a spark. The offense took over."
